Exploring Quiet Country Roads in NE Victoria

I decided to stay close to home today making an early start in the cold morning (-2.4c) air. It was beautifully clear and sunny nearby where I walked but fog was visible in parts of the valley below. The short loop of 5.3km is on quiet country roads.

I took the binoculars hoping to spot a few special birds but it was quiet except for the usual suspects of a large flock of Sulphur Crested Cockatoos (60+/-) harassing the neighbourhood with their screeching calls. Two Maned (Wood) Ducks were high in a dead tree searching out nest hollows and a few Striated Pardalotes on a power pole looking into the tiny holes on the cross bars. The cross bars are hollow and they make excellent safe nest spaces.

This old windmill (possibly built 70-80years) made by Bryan Bros of Colac. It pumps water from a shallow bore/well (30m+/-) into a small farm dam. There are very few windmills remaining in this area. Most have been replaced by solar systems as parts get harder to get and plumbers who know how to fix them disappear. This one is at the base of a granite slope is a bit of local history now.

A view on a similar morning looking out across a foggy Ovens Valley in NE Victoria.

Cockatoos with Mt Buffalo in the background today.
