We visited this area with the Birdlife Australia-Murray Goulburn branch members as part of a weekend trip to Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park. We were fortunate to visit this small lake beside the caravan park in the middle of Rutherglen. here is a link to the location; https://maps.app.goo.gl/X6k6y3WSDq1r8Gto8

We were pleasantly surprised to see Latham’s Snipe at Lake King, Rutherglen. It was dificult to photograph with the reed beds behind it. Latham’s Snipe is a migratory shore bird which spends it’s summer breeding time in Japan and northern Asia then heads to the southern hemisphere for the off season. Link is here
When this species arrives in Australia they spread to coastal and inland water bodies across eastern Australia.

Lathams Snipe is an unusual visitor in the middle of town.

The Murray River Turtle is common in the wetlands and billabongs close to the Murray River. This one found a large rock to bask on Lake King, note the broad shell about the size of a dinner plate. Turtle Link
